Okay, so I have 2006 Taurus SE. I got a rearview mirror with a compass and outside temp gauge. I've heard that these cars are sometimes wired for these mirrors even though they dont install them at the factory. I was looking under the hood for a good location to mount the sensor and I found this peculiar 2 wire plug next to the battery. It seems to be capped and mounted to the side, it's not plugged into anything. The wire colors are black and yellow with a green stripe. Is this the plug for the ambient temp sensor (please, please)? If it is, that would be sweet! See photo's. Another question...how do you remove the interior trim piece on the roof support around the windshield (see photo)? There are no screws holding it on. I checked the roof liner at the mirror hoping that there were wires there for the mirror but no such luck. There's a notch in the liner but no plug or wiring, so it would seem that I'll need to run wire to the mirror.

Thanks.

Does the horn work? That looks like the connector for the horns.

Ambient temp sensor is located sort of behind the Ford oval if you have it.

A-pillar cover comes off if you pull on it hard enough I believe.

Part of the mirror's wiring is already there. It is located behind the passenger's side a-pillar trim panel. You will need to obtain the section that goes behind the headliner at a junk yard or from eBay.

The ambient temperature sensor is located right behind the grill in the top-left corner. If there is no temp sensor, the wire harness/plug should still be there. However, I don't believe the wiring to the mirror carries the signals for the temp sensor. You may have to install your own wiring and tap into the sensor's wire harness. You can also get the outside temperature reading if you install an EATC ICP from a 04-07 Taurus. Additionally, the outside temp reading is also available in the message center, but I think that requires reprogramming or replacement of the cluster in order to get the temperature reading on the display.

When removing the A-pillar, start at the very top and give it a quick yank (not to hard) towards the other side of the car. Don't pull down on the trim panel when trying to remove it. Once freed, lean the trim panel towards the dash and slowly pull it towards you. Reinstalling is a bit tricky as you have to insert the trim panel into the dash at the right angle. There are three tabs where the panel goes into the dash, they must all slide into the slots in the dash. You may be able to see the tabs/slots through the windshield.

That's by the battery? Is it plugged it a dummy receptacle on the fender?

That should be for a hood switch.
It triggers the SEL/LS premium factory alarm.

the connector
You're looking for is round and and behind the grill. It should have two circular pins.. DON'T CONFUSE IT for the forward impact sensor.

I believe.

The horns are lower and behind the tire shroud.

On the 2006 SE, the Ambient Air Temp sensor is located here (where the pliers are pointing):

Use pliers or something to gently squeeze/push the connectors out, and you can pull the sensor and its wire up through the middle to disconnect (locking tabs on both sides) and replace the sensor... and then just reach under and pop it back in!

By the way, why are you wanting that plug to be the Ambient Air Temp sensor so badly? Sorry that it's not, but I'm curious as to why the "please, please."

I just replaced mine because my A/C works fine in warm (or cool) weather, but it stops cooling after a while (amount of time varies) in hot weather... and I'm hoping the $16 easy-to-replace sensor will get me back in the lap of cooling luxury.

Of course, it's raining today, so I may not know if it did the trick until a long drive in the heat... but if anyone has any other thoughts on what else it might be I'm all eyes. I don't think it's the freon, since it does blow quite cold when it's not too hot outside, and even at first when it is hot outside.

I've heard about a sensor in the actual dash that could be the problem? I don't know how, but if anyone has any more info on what sensor it might be, and how that might be the problem, I'd love to hear it. Admittedly, the problems started not long after I had removed the radio, but I didn't have any issues doing so, and believe that's likely a coincidence.

to: JudoJNoble - The Original Poster(OP) wants to install a rear view mirror with an out side temp reading on it. He was was trying to use the factory wiring/sensor to get the signal from the outside. It's a very noble way to mod wiring.

Thanks everyone for all the great information...

JudoJNoble, the please, please was to hopefully save me some time and hassle of "NOT" having to run wiring through the firewall for the sensor.

thesavo, you hit the nail on the head, thanks! I liked the "noble" remark, lets me know I was thinking rationally.

behlinla, yes the horns work.:rolleyes2:

thesavo, "That's by the battery? Is it plugged it a dummy receptacle on the fender?" Yes, it's plugged into a dummy receptacle on the fender. Thanks for clearing that up for me.

redhousenine, I do have about 3' of wiring on the mirror connector that I can use. Thanks for that info...I would've gone "drivers side" with the wiring.
" However, I don't believe the wiring to the mirror carries the signals for the temp sensor."

So I assume that I should find them under the dash and the ones in the pillar will have the switched +12? Also thanks for the detailed info on how to remove the pillar cover:D

If you have the connector available to map lamps (sun roof) you should be in luck. They are 12v+ with the car running and 15 min after turning of the engine. Here are the diagrams for the Interior Lamps.

If any of this attachments look like crap. please let me know.

Thesavo...thanks for the pics they were a big help.

I got the mirror all powered up, I just need to wire up the temp sensor. I decided not to use the existing wiring for the sensor because trying to locate those wires under the dash looks to be a nightmare. Does anyone know of a good spot to run the wires through the firewall. I looked and it seems to be pretty well sealed with no obvious ways of getting wires through.

Ahhhh....I think I know. My Taurus has a column shifter and there's an about 2" diameter rubber grommet in the lower middle of the firewall where I believe a floor shifter cable would run, that must be the spot?

Okay...I completely missed that. I was looking at the wiring to power the mirror. I see... it's in the C264 connector. So what you are saying is to tap the sensor wires at the connector. Do I have to remove the cluster panel or can it be reached from below?

Thanks...

I have never seen this connection point. I have only my diagrams to rely on. But I feel that if you have manual client controls. Then you have no "remote climate control module". It's possible that the wires terminate there and the pins are missing out on the other mating connector. Or it may travel down the harness to the next intermediate connector. Either way with manual climate controls, you could de pin it from the opposite end and take matching pins and run them towards the head liner.

By the looks of C264 they are micro wedgelock lock pins. These are made /designed by EPC, If I am right. You can find pins of that family in many places. O2 sensor, side view mirror, the smaller pins in the driver's door jamb.

I'll post some pics tomorrow of connectors that I think have matching pins.

The are round with some kind of key (point) protruding of 2 sides.

To answer you question about removing the instrument cluster; yes, I think you might have to.

Edit: no C264 was above my parking brake.

Being that this an SE model, one could assume that the wires from the sensor terminate at the connector (maybe)? I do have a terminal crimper. So as long as I can obtain the correct terminals for that plug housing all would be good. If removing the cluster isn't a major PITA, I'll go that route. I just need to check the book to see what's involved in removing the cluster.

Mirror's all wired. I removed the cluster and found the wires going to the temp sensor in the grill. I had to cut the wires from the plug harness. I found that if I tried to tap into the wires and reconnected the plug to the cluster it created to much resistance for the temp reading. I got the power for the mirror in the support column using the +12 that stays on for 15 minutes or until the doors are opened. Everything seems to work great. I'm happy:D Sorry it took so long to get back to this thread, but I was really busy. Now to get to work on the slight miss I've noticed?

BTW, removing the cluster is extremely simple if you have the plastic pry tools.

No, actually it was black and had a latch on it. The wires didn't run into the end of the connector they went in the side of it. The connector plugged directly into the top of the cluster panel. You had to move the lever on the latch to the side and when doing that it disconnected itself from the cluster panel.
